Using Election Awareness Campaigns for GOTV on Campus

In the last election, two-thirds of college students between the ages of 18 and 24 who did not vote cited reasons for not voting that demonstrate a lack of information. They were unaware of the registration and voting process, confused about residency rules, or had scheduling problems.

Last week, Josh told you about some of the great work being done at Michigan State University. Today we got word of another great voting effort being put on by another school, the University of Texas at Austin. This past Thursday, the school held its annual “Hook the Vote” registration event and managed to get 450 students on the voter rolls.

While Michigan State University lost in the Sweet Sixteen last night busted many people’s brackets, including this alum’s, the university is winning at helping students get the information they need to vote.

Following the 2000 Presidential election, a university-community task force was created to address confusion students faced on Election Day on where they could vote due to changes in Michigan election law, leaving many students frustrated over long lines and being turned away because they were not at the correct polling site.

Goals in Action: Ball State Moves to get Polling Place on Campus

If you’ve perused our toolkit recently, you’ll know that working with school administrators to get a polling place on campus is one of many things you can do to make voting more accessible at your school. Not only does establishing a polling place on campus make it easier for campus communities to cast a ballot on Election Day, but it also makes it more convenient for students to serve their local communities as poll workers or GOTV volunteers for the campaign of their choice.
