AASCU Civic Engagement Organizations Urge Pennsylvania Colleges to Update IDs

The American Democracy Project and The Democracy Commitment, two campaigns of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, urged their Pennsylvania members to update their student IDs to ensure that students could use them to vote.

This November should be an exciting time on Pennsylvania college campuses.  Students across the state, many for the first time, will cast a vote in the presidential election.  Unfortunately, many Pennsylvania students will be kept out of our political process. Some will not bother to go to the polls because they lack any of the recently specified forms of required photo identification; others will be turned away because they are unaware of the state’s new law.

Unlike any other age group, young adults, particularly college students, face obstacles to get to the polls. They are in new communities and don’t know the requirements to register to vote, where to vote, or how to vote absentee back home. It is critical this year that we help students get the information they need to register and vote. And you can help!

Host a National Voter Registration Day Event on Your Campus

The Fair Elections Legal Network and a coalition of other nonpartisan organizations unveiled www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org this week in support of National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) on September 25. This campaign is a field, technology, and media effort to expand voter registration efforts to tens of thousands of Americans who might not otherwise register by focusing coordinated efforts on one day of action.

New Hampshire Governor Faces Stark Choice on Student Voting Rights

New Hampshire Governor John Lynch must decide what to do with two bills that will affect the ability of the state’s college students to cast a ballot. The bills reflect the hostility to students that House Speaker William O’Brien displayed when he told an audience last year that young people are “foolish” and added that they “lack life experience” and “just vote their feelings.”
