Myers and Cohen: Young Michiganians should be able to preregister

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

Young Michigan voters had the highest turnout of any state in the 2022 midterm election, according to a recent report by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE).

Exceeding the 23% national youth voting rate, 37% of Michigan's eligible voters ages 18-29 voted, showing a passionate effort to make their voices heard. Young people are angry and frustrated with lawmakers making decisions on their behalf without considering the consequences they may face.

Based on a survey conducted by Campus Vote Project, abortion access, gun violence prevention and climate change concern young voters the most — young people are turning their excitement and commitment to these issues into votes.
