Students have a choice about where to register to vote.
Students attending college may register at their campus address or choose to remain registered or register at their permanent or home address.
You may only be registered and vote in one location.
Online voter registration requires your Michigan driver’s license or state ID number. If you are registering on or before the 15th day before Election Day, no proof of residence is required.
Michigan’s mail-in voter registration form asks for your Michigan driver’s license or ID number, or the last four digits of your Social Security number. Be sure to provide one of these numbers if you have it.
If you register on or after the 14th day before an election, including on Election Day, then must register to vote at your city or town clerk’s office and you’ll need to provide proof of residence. A digital copy of a document can be used.
Acceptable documents include: a driver’s license or state ID card, a current utility bill, a bank statement, a paycheck or government check, or another government document.
If you are voting by mail, you do not need to submit ID.
If voting in person, you will be asked to present a photo ID. Your photo ID does not need to include your home address. Bring your photo ID if you have it. If you do not have a photo ID, you will sign an affidavit that you do not have ID or don’t have it on you and vote a ballot that will be counted on Election Day.
Acceptable IDs include:
a driver’s license or identification card issued by Michigan or another state,
a U.S. passport,
a photo ID issued by a federal or state government,
a military ID with photo,
a high school, college or university photo ID, or
a tribal ID with photo.
If you want to register and vote at the same time on or after the 14th day before an election, including on Election Day, then you need to also present proof of residence, such as a utility bill or bank account statement with your name and residential address.
By Mail or Early In-Person
Any registered voter can vote absentee by mail or in person at a municipal clerk’s office without any excuse or reason.

Request forms for absentee ballots must be received in writing by your local election official by 5 p.m. the Friday before Election Day.
If you’re already registered at your current address, you can request and vote an absentee ballot in person at your municipal clerk’s office up to 4 p.m. on the day prior to the election.
If you’re registering to vote or updating your address by appearing at your clerk’s office on Election Day, you can request and vote an absentee ballot at the same time you register.
Completed absentee ballots must be returned so that your municipal clerk’s office receives them by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
You can return your completed absentee ballot by mailing it to your municipal clerk’s office, dropping it off at the clerk’s office in person, or dropping it off in a drop box in your jurisdiction. Voting sites will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. If you are in line by the closing time, then you MUST be allowed to vote.
Registering to Vote Does Not Affect Your:
Federal Financial Aid
Where you register to vote will not affect federal financial aid such as Pell Grants, Perkins or Stafford loans, or your dependency status for FAFSA.
Status as a Dependent on Your Parents’ Taxes
Being registered to vote at a different address from your parents does not prevent them from claiming you as a dependent on their taxes.
Being deemed out-of-state for tuition purposes does not prevent you from choosing to register to vote in your campus community.
Will registering to vote in Michigan affect my driver’s license or car registration?
The residential address you use for MI voter registration will be the same as the address for your MI driver’s license or state ID. Submitting a change for a MI driver’s license or state ID address will be applied to your MI voter registration and vice versa. This does not apply to those with driver’s license or state ID’s from a state other than Michigan.
